PAST

The foundations of what was to eventually become the "Melscot" kennel were laid in the 1979.

There is no dog breeder that would not feel pride and joy recollecting twenty-seven years of successful existence of his kennel, even more because the beginning and development of registered Melscot Kennel at the same time represents the beginning of Scottish terrier breeding in former Yugoslavia.

As the establishment of Melscot Kennel also means the first appearance of Scottish terriers in the state, I feel an urge and obligation to give you a general grasp of the breed’s history and bloodlines in Croatia, once a part of ex. Yugoslavia.

In respect to my long lasting involvement in cynology and awareness that a high quality breeding could only be based upon the top quality foundation animals,

after an extended and serious research, I have chosen three of the best kennels in England to start my breeding with.

Soon afterwards, I contacted the breeders and it turned out that they were the three most influential ladies at that time (Mrs. Muriel Owen – Gaywyn kennel, Mrs. Elisabeth Meyer – Reanda kennel and Mrs. Betty Penn-Bull – Kennelgarth).

Although very experienced and successful, they were extremely kind and gladly passed their knowledge to me, just another anonymous lover of the breed. I am still keeping their affectionate letters full of patience, advices and suggestions, as reminders of a relationship that would later on be developed into a long lasting friendship.

The foundation stock for Melscot Kennel was obtained in 1979 from Reanda and Gaywyn kennels.First three Scotties in our country ever!!!

The very first import was a black bitch Reanda Ebony Rock by Engl. Ch.

Gaywyn Landmark out of Reanda of Engl. Ch. Kennelgarth Knight Errant and granddaughter of Engl. Ch. Kennelgarth Viking), a sable brindle male Reanda Reveller produced by Engl. Chs Swiss Rannoch Solo and Glenecker Jeremy Whu and a bitch Gaywyn Anne-Marie, sired by a famous Engl. Ch. Mayson Monopoly out of Gaywyn Angela.

Unfortunately, Reanda Reveller sired only one of my litters, out of Gaywyn Anne-Marie, because he had missing tooth which, despite of the European and international standards, was considered to be "a big fault" at that time in our country (complete scissor bite was required). Of six puppies from this litter, three became national champions, two females became a foundation bitches for newly born kennels (Ch. Nessie Melscot – Hilscot and Nostra Melscot - kennel owned by Buric family), while all of the dogs in the litter had a complete scissor bite.

The mentioned interpretation of the standards, forced us to breed our bitches abroad. First “M” litter was sired by Engl. and Multi Ch. Law Lord of Scarista, winner of 63 CACIBs, 17 BOBs and 7 BISs in 1976 alone. When bred to Reanda Ebony Rock produced Mej Melscot who was to become national champion winning 4 junior CACs, 2 CACs, CACIB and BIS. In 1979 Mej was bred to vice world champion Rannoch Emperor.

The breeding program in 1980s was characterised by the acquisition of two dogs – a sable brindle male Glenecker Gerry (Another Story of Brio x Glenecker Rye) owned by Bedenikovic family and a black male Gaywyn Baron (Engl. Ch. Mayson Monopoly x Gaywyn Britania) owned by Buric family.

Glenecker Gerry was a significant producing sire and when bred to Ch. Mej Melscot produced Zena Melscot that became a foundation bitch for a kennel in Istria (owned by Serđo Radovic) and to Reandy Ebony Rock to produce Ares Kir Melscot who was to become a WORLD CHAMPION in Brno in 1990.

At the same World Dog Show, Austrian Klubsieger and Bundessieger, European junior champion Melscot Tip-Top (Gaywin Ambasador x Melscot Barkarola Becky), became junior vice world champion.

Mentioning Melscot Barkarola Becky, I cannot not to recall one of her previous litters.

As a daughter of Glenecker Gerry, who carried English blood lines of whiten coloured dogs, when he sired her litter produced the only whiten Scottie in my breeding program, a bitch Melscot Oxa Orchid.

Contact with Mrs. Elisabeth Clerc owner of the Rannoch Kennel, one of the most influential kennels at the European continent, played an important role for my breeding program in 1980s. In order to illustrate the quality of dogs produced in Rannoch Kennel, it is more than enough to mention its success on World Dog Show in Bern in 1979 where male Swiss Rannoch Solo became a world champion, Rannoch Emperor vice world champion, Rannoch Fantan junior world champion, while female Rannoch Baroness became world champion, Reanda Rain (owned by Mrs. Clerc) reserve world champion and Rannoch Fast Boomerrang (sister of Rannoch Fantan) junior world champion.

Thanks to Mrs. Clerc’s kindness and willingness to help me, not only two of our litters were sired by Swiss Rannoch Solo, but what is more, she thought me of breeding basics, combination of bloodlines and trimming, for what I am extremely grateful.

elOne of the litters sired by Swiss Rannoch Solo produced three national champions including two bitches Ch. Una Melscot and Ch. Ursa Melscot that also became very important producing dams in our breeding program..

Ch. Rannoch Hallmark

Several trips to Rannoch Kennel resulted in the acquisition of a female Rannoch Fast Leila (World Ch. Rannoch Fast Boomerang x Multi. Ch. Ben v. Tinsdal) and a top quality show dog and exceptional producing sire, brindle male Rannoch Hallmark (brother of World Ch. Rannoch Honey), carrying Swiss Rannoch Solo’s  and Raglan Royal Commander’s bloodlines.

During the years to follow, Scottish terriers, from an unknown breed, became one of the most numerous dogs exhibited on international dog shows in the country, while Melscot  was representing foundation and stimulus for other new coming kennels. If it is to be measured by success and influence in development of the breed, I have to mention kennels "Invisible Touch" (Goran Gladić) and "Yes" (Đuro Gladić) that based their breeding upon Serđo Radovic’s and Melscot dogs and whose domination is still present in Serbia.

Ch. Gaywyn Ambassador

In 1988 two dogs arrived - a black male Gaywyn Ambassador (brother of Engl. Ch. Gaywyn Admiral), sired by Kennelgarth Beau Brummel out of Gaywyn Arianna, and a bitch Nadie (Lumberjack of Gaywyn x Tamantha Ness of Gaywyn). Gaywyn Ambassador sired numerous top quality offspring – Ch. Melscot Tip-top and Melscot Timoti Timber, to name just a few.

In the first decade of existence, Melscot Kennels produced many dogs worth mentioning, but I would like to emphasise Ch. Melscot Alfred, sired by Rannoch Hallmark out of Una Melscot, owned by Davidovic family, who was to become European and International champion thanks to his show qualities, as well as, the enthusiasm of his owners.

The influence of Melscot Kennel and myself as it's owner on Scottish terrier breeding witnesses many acknowledgments “Acknowledgment for merits in development of cynology” by kennel club Opatija, appointment of an honourable member of kennel club “Dalmatinac”, merits by Club of sporting dogs in Zagreb and distinguish of Melscot Kennel with golden medal for contribution in the development of cynology by the Kennel club of former Yugoslavia.

During 1990s there is decreasing interest in many dog breeds, as well as, in Scottish terriers that resulted in a slight stagnation of breeding.

Copyright © Melscot Despite that fact, in order to preserve a quality of breed, a bitch Rannoch Something Black (Raijaj Carte Noire x Rannoch Golden Sable) and two males from Mayson Kennel were purchased, from which Sharaquin Black Knight from Mayson (son of Engl. Ch. Town Crier of Mayson) was very successful in breeding program and show ring.

In 1998 Dreamlike Black Grace was purchased, from the litter out of Rannoch Bonbon and Ch. Mystacle Merry Monarh.

To our great pleasure and thanks to Mr. Dan Ericsson’s kindness, two siblings from Raglan Kennel were obtained:- a bitch Raglan Rise Early

and AN APSOLUTELY UPSTANDING  male and great producer Champion Raglan Rising Generation out of SuCH Raglan Round of Cheers sired by SuCH Tamzin Toy Soldier.

PRESENT

The arrival of these two dogs from Raglan Kennels represents the bridge from past to present times for the Melscot in which, besides from Ch. Raglan Rising Generation there are dogs deriving from  very strong blood lines:

Melscot Zarah Leander, Multi Ch. Melscot Cora, TOP SCOTTIE 2006 , Mercedes of Charlie’s Dogs, Zeta WYS-Tabasko, Ch. Tina Turner of Charlie’s Dogs, Ch. Blackberry Scozias WYS/Tabasko and Ch. Balgair Rockabilly.

In 2006 two very perspective black puppies arrived in my kennel – a bitch Tamzin Theodora, sired by Ch. Morrisey At Mayson out of Tamzin Swedish Rhapsody, and a male Raglan Rufino out of FinnCh. SuCh Raglan Ricardo and SuCh WW-02, Sw-02 Raglan Royal Prospect.

SUMMARY

Summarizing my twenty-seven years in breeding Scottish terriers, I may conclude the following:

- breeding of Scottish terriers in ex. Yugoslavia begins with the Melscot Kennels

the quality of breeding was ensured by Melscot dogs with kindness of the world’s most famous breeders from Reanda, Gaywyn, Glenecker, Rannoch, Raglan and Balgair kennels, and I am extremely grateful for all they did for us

offspring from around seventy litters produced here in Melscot  has made this breed more popular and from an unknown dog breed Scottish terriers became recognisable breed with lots of fanciers and breeders

during the years we have produced over 30 champions as a National, International, European and World champions and wich is most important  we are keep producing them!

FUTURE GOALS

Melscot Kennels has strong breeding foundations, at the moment, based on world’s top bloodlines, wich we believe can be a bright light for our future breeding, that could play an important role in Scottish terrier breeding in Croatia still.
